traditional British Isles
This very old game has origins in Britain. There are many games about death and resurrection, they have survived because children seem to love pretending to be dead, especially when the ‘dead’ person comes to life again.

Lyrics

One child lies in the center of a ring pretending to be dead
1. Old Roger is dead and he lies in his grave, lies in his grave, lies in his grave,
Old Roger is dead and he lies in his grave, Hie Ho Lies in his grave.

A child stands at Rogers head with arms outstretched
2. They planted an apple tree over his head, over his head, over his head
They planted an apple tree over his head Hie Ho over his head.

Apple tree child pretends to drop apples with hands
3. The apples grew ripe and they started to fall, started to fall, started to fall,
The apples grew ripe and they started to fall, Hie Ho started to fall.

A child pretending to be an old woman gathers up the apples
4. There came an old woman a'picking them up, a'picking them up, a'picking them up,
There came an old woman a'picking them up, Hie Ho a'picking them up.

Old Roger jumps up and chases the old woman around the room
5. Old Roger got up and he gave her a knock, gave her a knock, gave her a knock
This made the old woman go hippety hop, Hie Ho hippety hop.
